Brick Roads of St. Petersburg

When we think about historic architecture, we look up at old houses and buildings. But do we ever look down to the design under our feet? Old roads are also part of our urban heritage and sense of place. They can tell us important stories. Saint Petersburg, Florida has more surviving brick streets than almost any city in America. Over 100 years old, these brick streets are rippled by a century of travel, expanding tree roots and shifting foundations.

But what is the story of the brick roads of Saint Petersburg? And why is almost every brick stamped with the name AUGUSTA BLOCK?

Brick Roads of St. Petersburg is a short film about this iconic historic feature of the city. The film mixes rich visual imagery of the city’s brick roads with archival images, old newspaper articles, historic maps and animation. The film was supported by a grant from the City of St. Petersburg.
